BIG MEETING
on 12.7.2004 from 3 to 6 pm
rick is going to Boston for the Best Books for Young Adults committee meeting
rick needs 15 of us to be at this meeting
the benefits of going are pizza (as always) and a selection of books to take home

CONTEST
so rick and angie made a CD
only problem is they need a CD cover
solution is to have us design one and the winner takes home a free CD
>> Now, what do you need to know to give you some inspiration?
-Take a look at the ALA Midwinter website and the horrid color scheme that has been chosen:<http://www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/midwinter/2005/home.htm> Do not feel as if you have to use this color scheme. Please. In fact, I insist on it.
-Think Boston. The tea party. Seat of US democracy. Patriotism. Beans. Ya know.
-Think Boston in the Winter. Cold. Really, really cold. Snow. Etc. Cold stuff,ya know.

MEETING ALERT

the book lists are up, check out the link.
if you don't have a list, email rick.
first timer? no prob

Viki's INSTRUCTIONS:
you look up the book on amazon.com
give it a rating from 1 - 5
1 being BAD BOOOO

5 being WOW! LOVE IT!
scribble down a quick summary if you feel the need
be prepared
rick sometimes asks why you give the ratings you do

Rick's INSTRUCTIONS:
You should be able to find a list there with your name. For example, if youname is "Todd", you would probably find a list titled, "Todd's List". If youdon't see a list, e-mail ASAP and I we can make one for you. Click on the list, click the button labeled "Edit" and you will see a list of books to review forthe meeting. For the most part, you will probably have most of the information you need inBWI to review books. Find the title of the item, click on "Details" (the littlemagnifying glass) and a summary, professional reviews and a picture of the bookscover will appear (if any of these things are available).
If you want, you can review the books in other ways.
Like:1) Go to amazon.com and find the book. Double check the author to make sure itis the same one. Look at the editorial reviews (like Publisher's Weekly, VOYA,School Library Journal, Booklist, etc.) and customer reviews to get an idea ofthe book. Look at the cover, and, if possible, use the "take a look inside"option.
2) Use databases like Proquest, Infotrac or Books in Print to find the books andlook at the reviews there.
3) Go to a bookstore or library and find the bookthere, leaf through it, look at the cover, look at the back, smell it, etc. toget and idea of the book.
4) Feel free to read the book if you have time. (It is not necessary, but youcan read it if you like.)

The questions you should be asking about each item are:
1) Is this something that looks interesting to me or would I like to read it?
2) Who would this appeal to and would that group like to read it? So if it is aStar Trek book, would Sci Fi readers like it? etc.
3) Does this book have mass appeal and should I buy it just because it is soooogood? Things to keep in mind when gathering your information include: -awards or nominations-other books by the author-length-genre-is it appropriate or of interest for YA audiences-is it appropriate for the audience at Shoreline-is it too young or old (our core audience is 12-18)-does it appear on any booklists-(especially for non-fiction but for some fiction) is the book timely or does itinclude information that is useful for homework

Blah blah blah . . . You don't have to gather all this information about everybook, but this should give you an idea of what you should be looking for.
if you're friends want to join STAB, give their emails to rick.

9.23.2004

All My Life for Sale by John D. Freyer (1)
How I live now by Meg Rosoff (0)
The King of Slippery Falls by Sid Hite (1)
The Last Guardian of Everness by John C. Wright (0)
Montmorency: thief, liar, gentleman by Eleanor Updale (0)
So B It: A Novel by Sarah Weeks (0)
The Usual Rules by Joyce Maynard (0)

so of all these books... which should rick get for our library... they're FREE

9.07.2004

I was browsing through my information on STAB and I noticed that many people have graduated, or I haven't seen them in months and/or years.
So, if you want to stay on the STAB e-mail list, respond to this e-mail, tell me to keep you on and I will.
On the other hand, if your time with STAB has run it's course, and you want to be removed from this list, let me know that too, and I will remove you from the list.
I think that I will try and purge the e-mail list after October 1st, so that will give people plenty of time to read and respond. Thanks.
I mentioned this a while ago, but I thought I should mention it again since I didn't get a lot of response. The Friends Booksale is this weekend and they need help setting up. I would personally appreciate it if you could find the time to come in and help out. The available times are:
Wednesday, Sept. 8, 12-9
Thursday, Sept. 9, 10-9
Friday, Sept. 10, 10-5
Sunday, Sept. 12, 2-4
Please call their volunteer coordinator to confirm the times. The number is 206.533.0335. Tell 'em Rick sent ya!
Again, I would really appreciate it if you could help. Also, please remember that these are the people that pay for your pizza, some of the programs we do and all sorts of other stuff. This is your way to say thank you and pay them back just a little bit. (Sorry about the guilt trip, but there you go.) Thanks guys! I know I can count on you.

5.31.2004

message from the rickster (tee hee) !!!

I'm buying books next week for the for the Read 3, Get 1 Free program. For
those of you not familiar with this program:

Basically, a person between 12-18 years old reads 3 books, writes 3 thoughtful
reviews about those books, and they get to pick a free book from the selection
we have here. However, I'm running out. So if any of you have suggestions as
to what people between 12 and 18 years would like to own, please let me know.

As I understand it, I can't guarantee that we can find every book requested, as
we are limited to stock on hand. But I will look for the requested titles. Let
me know ASAP. Otherwise, I will just use my best judgment in looking for the
books. And no one wants that. Happy Memorial Day Weekend !!!!
