What is the Shoreline Teen Advisory Board?

Find out more about STAB by reading this introductory letter, the primer and our mission statement. Then, if you want to join, fill out the background check, the online application and the parent/guardian signature form. (For a few suggestions on filling it out, take a look at this post.)

I wanted to bring everyone up to date on what we will be doing in STAB over the next couple of weeks. I don't think we will be getting any booklists until January. Which means no real STAB meetings until January. Here are my thoughts on what STAB will be doing for the next few months.

First off, the NDP comics program was cancelled because the presenters did not show up. (I found out that the mother of the presenters was in the hospital.) It has been rescheduled to Monday, November 17 at 7pm. Let your friends and family know.

Secondly, I would like to meet with all of the committees at least once. So, if you want to change which committee you are on, this is the time to do it. Also, if there is a committee that you think we need, let me know and we can try to put one together. Here is a list of the committees with a description. I did want to mention a change to one of the committees. The only committee with a requirement is the Membership Committee. I'm asking only people that have been with STAB for a year join. But, being the softy that I am, if you want to petition me to join, let me know and I'll see if I can make an exception. (By the way the number in parentheses next to each title is the number of people I would like in each group). If you can't remember which group you are in or your not in one yet, just ask. You can be on more than one committee. (In fact, I encourage it.)Here is the list:

*Y.A.M.S. (Young Adult Mail @ Shoreline), The Shoreline YA e-Newsletter (3 people)
We need the get the word out about what is happening in the library. This committee coordinates what goes into the monthly (bi-monthly?, twice a week?, etc.?) newsletter that may include new books, book reviews, spotlighted databases, upcoming events, past events, yam of the month, etc. (The name may be changed.)

*Community Notebook (3 people)
Another way to let people know what is happening in the library is thorough creating a spot where teens can go to learn about general community information. The Community Notebook committee coordinates the contents and upkeep of the Community Notebook. So far, the contents of the notebook include: Volunteering, School Help, In library Events, Outside Library Activities Book/Music/Video/Magazine/Movie reviews, Local Music scene, etc.

*Booklists & Processing (4 people)
Reviewing booklists for duplicates and un-needed items is one of the most important jobs of our group. Other tasks include reviewing the Dusty Books list, processing series paperbacks, classics new books and processing comics and magazines, etc. We will also be developing brochures and reading lists in the future. We will work with the display committee on this

*Displays (5 people)
Marketing the collection (sorry for the libraryspeak) is important to the YA area. This includes creating new displays, but also books reviews, new books, making flyers and brochures, advertising, etc. We will work with the Booklist committee on this.

*Member Services (4 people)
All of these jobs are focused on the library, but we also need people to help with managing S.T.A.B. to make sure that you are taken care of. This committee will coordinate meetings (like making copies and setting up the room), contacting new members and old, organizing new committees for special programs and doing general work to make STAB a better place. The only requirement for this committee is that you have been a member of STAB for a year.
